Abstract
Allergens, derived from various sources such as mites, pollens, and foods, are defined as non-pathogenic substances capable of triggering allergic responses. Their distributions and sensitization rates vary by climate, environment, and regions; thus, it is important to determine the nationwide distributions and sensitization rates of main allergens. Additionally, to improve allergy diagnosis and treatment currently dependent on allergen materials producted from other countries, the resource system of domestic allergens in Korea is also needed. After thorough investigations of previous studies, we found that the most important inhalant allergen with substantial exposure in Korea is Dermatophagoides farinae, and also revealed that the density and prevalence of pollens are steadily increasing. Based on the sensitization rate and specificity for domestic condition in Korea, the priority of main allergens to be preferentially targeted in allergen resource system was also suggested, together with proposal for the plan on the domestic allergens resource bank in Korea, It would be expected to contribute to the development of diagnostics, therapeutics, and management in allergic diseases appropriate for Korea population.
